Jonathan Kauffman headshotLike most cooks, I fell in love with restaurants after filling in a few shifts on the dishwashing station at a small bistro in St. Paul, Minnesota. After working in restaurants throughout college, I moved out to San Francisco and cooked for a number of years, then left the kitchen for the more lucrative world of journalism.

I reviewed restaurants in the Bay Area and Seattle for 11 years as the staff critic at the East Bay Express, the Seattle Weekly, and SF Weekly. From 2012 to 2014, I was the San Francisco editor at, and left to join the food section at the San Francisco Chronicle.

My reporting and criticism have won a James Beard award, a California Newspaper Publishers Association award, and other honors, and my articles have been anthologized in several editions of Best Food Writing. I contributed regularly to San Francisco magazine and Wine & Spirits for a number of years, and have also written for Lucky Peach and Slate.

I am available for birthday parties and indoor weddings.
